NIEER gives the Texas pre-k program a 4 out of 10 on quality

The National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) rates the Texas public school pre-k program poorly, giving it a 4 out 10 in its latest “State of Preschool Yearbook.” NIEER bases its assessment of quality on how programs are designed. Though Texas’ program receives low marks from NIEER on a number of items:

• Degree requirements for assistant teachers

• Class size limits

• Staff-child ratios

• Comprehensive health screenings

• Meals provided

• Teacher/class monitoring
