Ten Texas Communities are designated for SB76 Demonstration SitesDr. Susan Landry, Director of the State Center for Early Childhood Development (SCECD), housed at the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston announced the ten Texas communities who will participate in the Texas Early Education Model: (TEEM): Achieving Higher Levels of School Readiness in Cost Effective Ways. This education model was a part of Senate Bill 76 passed during the last regular session. The communities receiving awards are: Brownsville, Laredo, Raymondville, Houston, San Antonio, Amarillo, Wichita Falls, Fort Worth, Dallas, and Austin. The communities are eligible to receive approximately $500,000 in materials and services over the next two years aimed at encouraging different early childhood education entities to integrate their work with other local agencies to better prepare children for kindergarten. Project activities will focus on assisting communities to integrate services to ensure high teacher quality by participating in an online professional development program, palm pilot assessment of children and classroom mentoring. Participants in the TEEM project will also use research-based curriculum approaches in pre-school classrooms, further enhancing enrolled children’s development of school readiness skills. Project funding in the second year will be based on satisfactory progress toward first-year objectives and activities. An Advisory Committee to SCECD will report to the State Legislature on the progress of these service integration demonstration projects in September 2004. A final report will be presented to legislature in September 2005. |
